Here in Ireland we call them Garden Cross Orb Spiders, in Europe its Common Garden Orb Spider (Araneus diadematus).
Thanks so much Keith, I pass these guys everyday and the closer I look the more I see the sheer amount of them and the empire they’ve built, incredible.
Awesome, no worries. These guys are cool, if you go near them they sometimes shake their webs.
Hope it is not inappropriate to say, but that web looks like the spiders on LSD in the 60s-70s.
Not inappropriate at all, though NASA’s experiment with spiders on drugs in space feels a tad bit inappropriate. I wish I was there when the proposal came up to take spiders to space and give them LSD. There is a similar experiment on Youtube that shows an artist trying to draw with increasing LSD doses. I found both experiments interesting and creepy. Someone submitted photos of the web making skills of an Orbweaver getting increasingly erratic when it apparently became sick with a fatal illness. In the link is the first (published) time someone drugged spiders for research – so he didn’t have to change his bedtime to watch Orbweavers make webs!
