Comments & ID Thoughts
About 1.5" across the outstretched leg tips. Outdoors, sitting in the middle of a small but classic spider web. Southern California. Goes with previous photo that I posted of the opposite side.

Argiope argentata, Silver Argiope. Gorgeous photo! Thank you for adding the photo to pair with the ventral image. This photo deserves to be seen easily. She has vibrant colors, less silver than usual. I checked the sightings of Argiope species at BugGuide.net to see what species are in your range https://bugguide.net/node/view/2033 and A. argentata is the best answer. To see the range, it is under “data” and an account is required. The account is needed to deter bots from slowing their site.
Thank you again! It was a struggle to get that shot since she was only about 1.5 feet off of the ground. I was on one knee, bent over, holding a piece of wood behind her to block the sun, and trying to operate my phone camera with one hand, within a couple of inches of her. She put up with it all. Didn’t scurry off.
I love stories about what we went through to get a shot! My phone went for a swim in a brook and I’ve done an unintentional backflip off of a toilet I was standing on. No injuries YET. A Pop Socket attached to the middle of the back of the phone can make it possible to hold the phone with a couple of fingers and use the camera functions with other fingers. I haven’t dropped my phone this way, it leaves the other hand free for a flashlight. I like your method of blocking sunlight, I haven’t tried that.
Hello, my photo that you are commenting on here is still listed as Unidentified. Can you help with adding the ID, as it will ask about male/female, maturity, attributes, and I don’t know such details. I will be tagging my other photo of the same spider with this same comment. I don’t quite know my way around the site. Thank you!
