I believe its 99% chance a Nephilengys cruentata

shawnbrito

It’s a common species of Widows (Latrodectus) found in Sri Lanka & India.

This spider species is found island wide. From the City to the Hills. I believe it’s a species of widow spider (Latrodectus), and mildly venomous. I’ve seen these guys many times (too many times). Often found under exposed roofs and in corners of houses.

No, its a Nephilengys cruentata.
.Family: Araneidae

Thanks for your feedback greenvilleeee,
I saw the photo details: do you think the “Nephilengys” may have migrated from Africa to Sri Lanka? I read stories of spider hitching rides on cargo ships/boats.

Picture Location: Galle, Sri Lanka
The “Nephilengys cruentata” is from Affrica according to Wikipedea.
Nephilingis cruentata – Wikipedia

Yes, it is now spelled (as of 2013) Nephilingis for this species. Earlier sources will have the original name.

https://wsc.nmbe.ch/species/22473 This is the World Spider Catalog info. I haven’t tried to identify the ID of the spider in the photo. According to this reputable source N. cruentata has been introduced to Indian Ocean islands by boat. So it is possible.
