Wow! Are you doing this all in the daytime? Your pics look like daylight. The foliage in your state provides a lot of shade for spiders to be out in the day. I found the Orb Weavers wherever I could see or smell deer. They were easiest before sunset, using a flashlight to see the webs. I think you already found all the species I found.
It depends – I do it all, daylight or night. Alot of my pics look like daylight, but are actually dark. This is because my flash on my camera works really well and lights everything up, plus I usually zoom in when I edit the photo! My personal experience with Orb Weavers is I can often find them (especially small ones) in the middle of the day. From my experience the best time in my area to find Orb Weavers is around 8pm-11pm or right in the dark around 6am. I have found over a dozen full size Orb Weavers… Read more »
I was surprised when I found so many orbweavers out in the daytime in South Carolina. We usually say that they come out near sunset and hide at sunrise. I wonder if that is based on Northern US and Northern European climate. I have found orbweavers during the day in New Hampshire, but it is usually in a shaded area or a cloudy day. Much basic spider basic info and names came from a few researchers. I think one of my professors said Linnaeus started documenting and naming life forms starting in Virginia. That’s why “virginia..” is part of the… Read more »
Thanks for teaching me something new. But yeah, the last couple months have been basically dead of orb weavers. I got some Joros, some tiny random ones, and a few small Neoscona or Araneus. Around here from my experience around August/September is really banging with Orb weavers. TECHNICALLY in 2 months+ the Orb Weavers normal size ones will start popping out. All of my work recently has been Anderson SC and I can’t wait till it gets hotter+high humidity and head down into deep woods and Swamp. I like to often walk to the spot in which I will spider… Read more »
