My initial thought was a black widow but I’m not sure if they live in New England. It is very big and it is residing in my garage.

Hi, first, yes we have black widows in New England. At least 2 species. That was a surprising fact I learned this year. I haven’t found any New Englanders yet that know that. That’s okay, mosquitoes and ticks are statistically far more likely to kill or disable us. The spider in your photo is an orbweaver kind of spider. They aren’t dangerous except in some unlikely theoretical situations. The really good thing is that they eat mosquitoes and some of our local spider species kill black widows and ticks
