This was submitted by a friend asking if anyone could identify it. Looked pretty rare and on ground cover in December in Massachusetts up in the Blue Hills.

Hi, I’m surprised she’s alive since there has already been a killing frost. I haven’t seen her color pattern, but I think she’s a marbled orbweaver, Araneus marmorous. Their legs have the color pattern that starts red and white and becomes black and white toward the feet (Thanks for the tip Dr. Ewing!). The abdomen has a recessed furrow pattern. She may be a rare species or subspecies that I haven’t learned yet. Thank you for sharing the photo. There may be more opinions still to come..
