The spider featured above was chilling on the outside of my window screen today. He/She certainly captured my attention as it was obviously larger than a mosquito but not shaped one. I live near a wooded area and a field with a swampy boggish low spot so mosquitos are rampant. Also are deer and raccoon. There’s even an owl I often hear when I’m lucky enough to be awake before dawn and even sometimes shortly after dark. Hi, this is a Long-jawed orbweaver. I can’t tell which species it is, but the genus is Tetragnatha. I just some of these for the first time recently. They can be impressively acrobatic, which makes me wish mine had been on window screens for photographs.
Huh. Maybe others have been misidentifying theirs as well. Or, maybe they have some similar characteristics? If I didn’t notice absolutely everything, I doubt I would have been granted the opportunity to capture such a wonderful photo. This wasn’t the first shot but since the spider was so comfortable where it was sitting I was lucky enough to get to play around with the lighting and focus on my phone’s camera app.
