Comments & ID Thoughts
This big guy kicked me out of my resting spot on the beach in the sand just north of Malibu. Didn’t want it to wind up in a bag or a shoe so I moved it. Furry legs, visible pincers. Color in photo is true to life. Any ideas?
Could it be a trap door spider?

I think this is a Trap Door spider of some kind (Ctenizidae). My initial guess based on coloration and location would be Ummidia spp. but I can’t see the legs well enough to say for certain how accurate that is.
Yes- that’s what it looks like. It was quite large and unconcerned with my presence but stopped moving when I stood over it to take photo. Thank you!
I might suggest female Bothriocyrtum californicum, I can’t see detail to be certain of Ummidia genus, but possible.

As I suspected- I think the trap door is a valid guess. Thanks so much for your input
Hi, welcome to Spider ID. 🙂 This looks like a Wafer-lid Trapdoor Spider (Euctenizidae, Aptostichus sp.).
