Dark brown almost black in colour. Sorry for the blur it wouldn't stay still. It was about a little over an inch in length, no more than two.
My best guess is a black house spider but google isn't really helping. Can anyone help?

I had the same spider and you were correct in that it is a species of house spider. I was told by a friend who is a science teacher that this is a common giant house spider and they have been known to get quirte large.
The spider in this picture is not a Giant House Spider. Typically Giant House Spiders refer to three members in Eratigena genus of the family Agelenidae (Funnel-Weaver). This spider seems to be in the Gnaphosidae (Stealthy Ground Spiders). Most likely Scotophaeus blackwalli (Mouse Spider). https://spiderid.com/spider/gnaphosidae/scotophaeus/blackwalli/
