Comments & ID Thoughts

This spider was on the ceiling of my hotel room (5th floor) - the window is sealed, although there may be some big enough breaks in the seal round it to let this small spider through - I would say it was about 3-4cm from the tips of it's front legs to that of the back - the end of the legs, after a thicker blackish- brown foreleg was thinner and reddish-brown, maybe vermillion - The body was blackish-brown (more black than brown) with a white oval spot on the back that you can see in the photo. I have a second photo that may aid ID - someone joked (I think) about it being a Black Widow (presumably the European version, or "Malmignatte" - it might be a juvenile or a male at a stretch? Otherwise I really don't know - it did not seem agressive only lowering itself a short distance on a length of silk and moving it's legs in what seemed like a defensive display when I got too close to take the photo... Many thanks to anyone who can help identify this spider as I'm intrigued now :-)
