We are currently building our house and found this spider today. It was about the size of my hand with the body being about an inch to an inch and a half long

Hi, welcome to Spider ID. 🙂 This is a Wolf Spider (Lycosidae) carrying her young. Tentatively (because the abdomen is obscured) looks like Tigrosa georgicola.
