I’m guessing if it is indoors in Canada then it’s a pet, right? We can’t use or ID photos of spiders bought from wildlife dealers. There is no evidence of place of origin. It could have been bred in Canada from a spider illegally poached and transported from Mexico. Many animals in the pet trade are stolen from their natural habitat, leading to endangerment and potentially extinction. If you question the species identification you got from a dealer check out the tarantula forum on Arachnoboards.com

There are no species of Theraphosidaes that live anywhere near the providence of Canada you are in. If you are finding them in the woods near your house then people are dumping them out there to die. Tarantula’s like this cannot survive the cold winters that you guys get.

That’s sad. Sometimes poachers who deal in “exotic” wildlife dump the animals in the woods when they think they are about to get caught. I have finches in my yard that are from a southern continent. The dealer who imported them illegally set them loose to avoid getting caught, I think it was the 1940’s. Now they range across the entire US. They are a competitive threat to our native finches.

Yeah it sucks that people are too ignorant to realize the harm that can come from releasing a pet they don’t want anymore. In the town where I live there was a person who was dumping exotic snake skins into some nearby woods. I’m pretty sure he was doing it because he probably didn’t want to get caught by throwing them in his own trash. Most of the skins were from red-tail boas and such. I never found any actual exotic snakes in those woods but if he were to dump some that he wasn’t able to illegally sell then… Read more »
