Comments & ID Thoughts
Hello people, I'm an arachnophobe that decided to try and get over my fears and keep a spider as a pet instead of killing it. I randomly found this spider cramped up under my window in a sort of dusty place in one of the house rooms and I decided to catch it and put it inside a jar "enclosure" I made for it. TD:LR INFO: saudi arabia, city of Jeddah. Never ever seen a spider like this in my entire life, I've only seen cellar spiders (those ones with long legs) and jumping spiders.

I am having a hard time with scale here, how big is this specimen?
I would’ve posted more pictures to show it better but it looks like I can’t. it’s not big, it’s the size of the tip of my pinky, mere millimeters.
Also, do you happen to have any idea about this spider? I really want to know whatever I could about it. Thank you.
that helps. No, I am in the US. So this specimen is research for me. Not familiar, but I will do what I can to help with an ID! Check back often!
Thank you! I’m glad I could provide some research material for you. I’ve only had it for almost two days now, but I noticed it isn’t webbing inside the jar I put it in, no webbing at all. And it also ignores tiny cockroaches I tried to feed it… So I assumed it’s not hungry and I’ll try feeding it sometime in a few days.
You should take this to a local spider biologist for an ID. To me this looks perhaps to be a juvenile theraphosid of some type, maybe young trapdoor spider if you have those. You will need a local expert on this one. Let us know what you find. Do you have a biology department at a university nearby?
I wish that were possible, but people in my area really don’t care about spiders at all, I don’t even think that we have spider biologists or spider experts in my country, let alone city. I’d just appreciate having as much info about what this spider could be, even if it’s not an exact ID. It’ll help with research. And as for being a trapdoor spider, I don’t see it trying to burrow or dig at all. And when I found it it was cramped up against a wall, in a really tiny hammock of dirty webs.
Email me some additional photos with an object like pencil for scale. Make sure they are not blurry and evenly lit. I will submit them to an arachnologist here to see if we can at least assign it to a family group. mary@supmorrobay.com.
Alright I’ll email you some pictures now.
