We live in Massachusetts ... this is hanging out by our front door this evening ... we tried to look at a bunch of spider photos - but nothing matched.
Any thoughts of what type?

I like your opening line, “We live in Massachusetts….” I live too close to Massachusetts. 😉 This is a male Nursery Web Spider, Pisaurina mira. Not dangerous to people. It is an ambush hunter that hunts in leaf litter low foliage. They can jump like Jumping Spiders, but are closely related to Fishing Spiders. They like to rest on doors, maybe because there is a nearby light attracting nocturnal insects. I had a female living on the siding of my house. She mostly ate grasshoppers and katydids.
