Unknown Steatoda Species. Her thorax is now a dark red compared to the bright red when she was younger, and she has become much larger.

She is unbelievably beautiful. I saw your original post a couple months back and I hope that someone is able to positively identify her.
Here is an interesting study on silk pheromones and web reduction in black widows. I am intrigued by their method of observing/capturing wild males – they allow the female to spin a web in a mesh container, remove her from the web, and place the mesh container with the web in an outdoor location overnight. Males of the same species are attracted to the pheromones in the female’s silk and can be caught near the containers. They used glue traps in the study, but I imagine it would be possible to set up a live capture pit trap all around… Read more »
