Picture of unidentified spider

Comments & ID Thoughts

I photographed this spider in Vilanova i la Geltru (Catalonia, Spain). I could not find the exact match of this spider to other published spiders. Thus, I would, tentatively, classify it as a Latrodectus spider genus (one of the many black widow spider species). If someone finds what specie and genus this spider belongs, please, feel free to contact me.

This is, fortunately, not a Latrodectus species. Look at its posture and the orientation of its legs. This is undoubtedly a crab spider. To find out which type, I would say that the family Thomisidae, the Crab Spiders, is your best bet. I’ve never seen this particular type before, but it reminds me of the flower crab spiders of the genera Misumenia and Misumenoides. A fascinating tidbit about flower crab spiders is that some are capable of changing color to blend in with their flower. I would recommend checking out eurospiders.com for more specific information on crab spiders found in… Read more »

BugGuide.net is good, but only covers North America. If all else fails, you could also try submitting your (excellent!) photo to a local university for identification. SpiderID does not necessarily have entries for all the different types of spiders around the world.

You are very welcome! I’d love to hear what you come up with for ID. It’s a very cool spider and impressive photography. Best of luck.

Ooh! I have no idea what all the photography lingo means, but I’d love to learn how to get better macro shots. I take my pictures with a point-and-shoot (Olympus Stylus 7010). It has a “super macro” mode that does pretty well, but it doesn’t have the same depth of focus field as this. I understand that the higher-level cameras with interchangeable lenses can get pretty pricey.

I think I found it, on a French spider website called Les Araignees. Here is their page on Synema globosum. SpiderID also had a sighting of something similar from Malta.
