It looks like a Fishing Spider, possibly Dolomedes triton. They aren’t medically significant to humans. They’re quite cool spiders! I’ve watched them sit on rocks in a shallow part of a brook fishing together. They put feet in the water to feel for vibrations that feel like prey. It is like fishing with a rod, you can tell a fish strike versus nibbles and hooking weeds. When they feel the right vibrations they walk across the water to an insect or dive for a fish, frog, tadpole, etc. The hairs on their bodies form bubbles as they dive. The bubbles… Read more »

Interesting it was about a quarter mile or more from any water source. Wonder why it made its way to my house. Do they bite?
Spiders don’t bite unless they feel threatened. If you leave a spider alone, they won’t bite 🙂
