This might be Nuctenea umbratica, the Walnut Orb-weaver.

I can’t agree with you on that. I really think the morphology is that of an orb weaver, and also the World Spider Catalog at https://wsc.nmbe.ch/species/8693 lists Badumna insignis as, “Distribution: Australia. Introduced to Japan, New Zealand.”
If it helps it was approximately 4-5 centimetres in length
