Comments & ID Thoughts
My father had seen one a lot larger further away from the house. These two were found less than 15 feet from the house and one after these two was directly in front of our porch. When agitated they raise up into a fighting stance and have large sharp mandibles. I am uncertain of their species after scrolling through every spider in our state on this site.

I think I filmed the same spider as you caught. I just uploaded a picture of it. I would like to know as well what this species is.
Just went and looked a bit ago and that’s definitely the same type of spider. It’s not any kind of tarantula I’ve ever seen they have no hairs, also given that every one we’ve seen has been in the middle of the grass we can safely assume they’re burrowing spiders of some kind. Another thing I failed to mention in my post is that when we caught the two we did and put them in the container together they fought till one died. These are extremely aggressive spiders as well the one we had became irritated and tried to fight… Read more »
That makes sense then if they don’t have hairs. The one I found crossing the road didn’t have hairs either. Or if it did they were very short hairs. It went under some long grass on the gravel road so I tried to lift the grass up with a stick and it went into a fighting posture. Very aggressive. I left it because I had my dogs with me. Didn’t want them to get bit. I’ve never seen a spider that bit here in Missouri. Supposedly there are Tarantulas but I’ve never seen one. But I think your on to… Read more »
I’m pretty sure they were Black Purse Web Spiders. https://bugguide.net/node/view/162793 Your observations match the species well. They are an atypical form of tarantula. They form burrows with a cone-like web. Similar to trap door spiders with the hole in the ground. They’re known for being possibly the most aggressive spiders. in USA. Attacking the container is definitely not typical spider behavior. Yes, they would probably nip a dog, which would be more painful than harmful. Bacterial infection from the puncture is a possibility. I would carry a long stick to protect my dogs and keep my hands from coming between… Read more »
