Comments & ID Thoughts

Hi y’all! I live in mid west Texas, I’m new here 1-1/2 year. My wife of 40 years is afraid of any kind of a bug even Butterflies but she is absolutely afraid of Spiders to the point if she see the tiniest spider she goes bonkers and makes my life here a nightmare, CRAZY! Let’s not get it twisted, I am not a fan of the Spider of any sort BUT I don’t lose my complete mind on site. That said, we bought a homestead, more home than land, pretty big home and put together well to the point we cannot even entertain the thought of even a Ant getting in, and they don’t but Spiders do, all kinds. We went around the house inside and out, solid as a jug. We sprayed bug repellent all around, in one go around we sprayed 200.00 worth, overkill, her bright idea! No good! Im off subject a bit, I don’t care for Spiders, like I said, I just want to ease our minds a bit. I just don’t know if they or some is Poisonous or not, what creeps me out is my Cat doesn’t like some of the big ones, none of Em really! But she’s like me we don’t freak out but my wife is another story, I’m trying to calm her down and I’m Forever and Ever hearing about something that creeps me out too to the point I get the death ear. I’m on the verge of losing my mind, another thing is she have this death defying ear piercing shrilling scream and she runs like something is chasing her and I’m totally horrified and go to grab whatever a Gun, knife, mop, fork but before I know it or get to grab something She’s on my Back I mean she literally jumps on my back and darn near strangles me to death screaming in both my ears till I’m deft at the same time and I can’t get her off of me all I see is my life passing by every, single,Time!!!! Out of nowhere!? And at the time I don’t know what’s going on,I’m about to die! Is all I know. She holds on to my neck to brink of me passing out can’t breath, can’t turn around or nothing, I must be kinda strong or something I only weigh 20 pounds more than her but she’s definitely stronger than I it seems, just to find out she saw a Spider, my Heart racing about to have a Heart Attack over a Spider, come on now! I told her countless times till I’m blue in the face not to do that, it doesn’t mean A thing. Sorry to make a short story long but I need all of your help in identifying these creepy Spiders, I submitted a photo of one we can start by giving me a name and mostly important is it or is it not poisonous? Please tell me! I’m trying to get some order in my home by educating our understanding about these creepy bugs. Thank y’all all in advance for any help or advice you can give and be assured I ll comment back,THANKS!!!!

Hi there. I am so sorry you have this problem. This is a wolf spider called Rabidosa punctulata, the Dotted Wolf Spider. Its bite is considered on par with a bee or wasp sting – uncomfortable but harmless. I would encourage your wife to seek help for what sounds like arachnophobia (fancy medical term for an out-of-control fear of spiders). A qualified mental health professional might be able to help her get her anxiety under control. At the very least, they can offer and teach more appropriate ways to respond (if she is willing). There is no shame in needing… Read more »

I’m glad you both survived the incident of the bee. That must have been terrifying. A lot of people, I might even say most people, initially refuse to seek treatment for anxiety. The very idea takes getting used to. Don’t give up hope. The idea of getting help is less intimidating if you know what to expect. The gold standard of anxiety treatment these days is a technique called Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. It’s a versatile, science-based method, based on the concept that by changing the way we think, we can change the way we feel and behave. If you want to… Read more »
