I would actually guess Leucauge venusta; the side lines continue straight, while in Leucauge argyra, they jog in towards the center. Take a look at this BugGuide.net comparison:
I agree with you. I was misled by the etimology: argyro- means silver in Greek and I thought that no other Leucauge could have that silvery appearance :).
You are welcome! Oh, very cool. Yes, a little knowledge of Latin and Greek goes a long way when interpreting scientific names. It also makes me slightly less interested in eating vermicelli noodles. Just kidding, I know they’re still great. But my family has long since forbidden me from sharing “cool facts” at the dinner table.
All the Leucauge spiders (as far as I know) have that wonderful silver. It’s glorious! I’d love to see one in person.
Speaking of silver spiders, I found an Argyrodes in my garden few days ago. It’s a small Theriididae specialized in mooching of off big Orb Weavers; this sly little guy just hangs around their webs waiting for the right moment to steal small preys. In a word, a parasite ๐ The funny thing is the owners of the webs don’t seem to mind being parasited ! Ah! There it is: Dewdrop Spider ๐ I don’t think you have it in America. At least I’m sure no picture of it has been submitted here yet, so that would be a new… Read more ยป
That’s really cool! Yeah, we’d love to see it! I’ve posted a few of my pictures, and it hasn’t caused me any trouble. If a species is submitted that we have no page for, the moderator will just ask the admin to create a page for it. ๐
