Comments & ID Thoughts

I’m making another stab at “Hogna antelucana”. I’ve decided to label the two variants open and closed vee (light colored vee near the back of the carapace) since this is the most reliable characteristic. I’ve also noticed that the midline stripe widens as it approaches the closed vee although some individuals show a brief pinching there.

Midline stripe width stays more even on the open vee variant, and there are many have thin light bands flanking the mid-line stripe. The cardiac mark is more prominent (darker) on the closed vee variant although on some a large central part of the cardiac mark is lightened to varying degrees.

This is the largest I’ve seen, in the latter part on 2019:

It is the closed vee variant, and one with a light center to the cardiac mark.

I’ve yet to see any really large open vee variants. Here’s a fairly large one seen recently:

The cardiac mark is less prominent, more because the surrounding area is darker than the cardiac mark being any darker than the closed vee variant.

That would be your Texas Tarantula Nice shot love the markings on it’s back that make it appear to have eyes on it’s back.
