This is a member of the Pholcidae family. It reminds me of Holocnemus pluchei, but I’m not quite sure. The mark on the thorax seems to match and so does the marble-like abdomen. Legs with whitish joints and dark bands, which is fine..a better view on the marks on the abdomen would make my day 😉
I am puzzled here because I thought I added a comment here that I too thought this to be the marbled cellar spider but I could not find any references of them being in VA or on the east coast for that matter. So I am happy that you also think it looks like Holocnemus pluchei! i am trying to get better pics as he was still in the same spot tonight but he did not like my camera flash at all and scurried away to hide. i will try again tomorrow. i think he is very pretty by the… Read more »
Oh you thought that too? Don’t bother to take another pic then, consider it filed. I totally agree on the beauty of this spider and I’m am lucky enough to have one in my house. Unlike its ” ordinary- looking cousin”, I mean, Pholcus Phalangioides, H.pluchei don’t like that much living indoors . As a matter of fact, mine lives hard by a shutter box, just inches from my terrace 🙂 I have to admit that I never noticed that marlble-like gloss until you posted this picture. I can’t wait to see a pic of your guy! And I am excited that you have one just for this fact that I don’t find references to them being here! I do want to see a better view of its back though…so I am sure I will be venturing out for more photo sessions with my marbled beauty. ..if it will ever stop raining in ty he evenings!

North America is not mentioned. How strange..

There’s no need for you to wait any longer, actually. It’s been posted some hours ago 😉
Well I am a slacker! I shall go see….
