Comments & ID Thoughts

Looking for help identifying this spider. I'm thinking possibly a Wolf Spider....but also resembles some brown recluse images I found on the internet. The piece of molding he is on is 2.5in wide, so he's fairly large. Wife and kids are freaked out, so any help identifying this and putting their fears to rest would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi, welcome to Spider ID. 🙂 This is a Huntsman/Giant Crab Spider (Sparassidae) … I would need to see just a little more of the face to give you a genus. Big black chelicerae would make it Olios giganteus, blonde chelicerae would make it a Curicaberis sp..

Hi, I think I can help a bit knowing huntsman and Olios. While these are venomous and can bite, they seem very reluctant to. A lot younger, I used to catch and play with the gold huntsman(Olios) and never bitten by any giant crab spider. Experts say they are no more dangerous than a bee sting. Not saying to interact with them, they do prefer to be left alone. Good bug catchers while they are around.
