Comments & ID Thoughts

This spider is in south phoenix, and has made its circular web in our son's rope swing in the back yard. The web is about 4 feet off the ground and is in prime insect catching real-estate. We have named her Lolita and allowed her to stay as she has caught her fair share of flies.

Her web is almost perfectly circular and has a system of web behind it that seem chaotic. She is very clean and does not let old meals hang in her back web for long. She has recently spun a hammock like basket that she has retreated to for a day or so then goes right back to center web.

Based on what I can tell, she is an orb weaver, but am hopeful someone can either confirm or correct.

Thanks!

Hi. Certainly an orb weaver, sorry I can’t tell which one. She will get her share of flying insects while she is around. I amuse myself at night with a flashlight attracting bugs into their webs. Sometimes drives them nuts, shaking their web, very gently touch them with a finger they sometimes do he same. They are good housekeepers, they even go to the edge of their web for potty breaks.
The little hammock may be where she hides or molts, but unless some determined bird gets them, they will be back.
