Yours is a good question… It’s called “sabilimemtum”, thicker threads that are thought to “stabilize”the web, but scientists are still debating on its purpose.
Thanks- today our pet trapped a honeybee and wrapped in web-like threads. Then it paused for some time before eating the bee for lunch by appearing to poke its head inside the wrapping
