Comments & ID Thoughts

Anyone know what this is? I’ve seen a few lately. (I don’t think I can post more than 1 pic per entry, so I’ll post more separately.) I’m no expert, but at first I thought Argiope aurantia, yellow garden spider, but the abdomen seems too narrow for that to be true. This one didn’t have banded legs, but the next one I’ll post next had 2-3 yellow bands per leg. The webs were large, spanning up to 2.5 meters from a tree limb over and down to a pile of weeds and sticks around a fallen oak, right on the edge of a small lawn. The web appeared to have multiple layers, too. The bodies were large, easily 30 mm or more, not including the legs. When disturbed (I had to clear out the brush), the spiders climbed up the web into the trees.
