Comments & ID Thoughts
POST #2: Anyone know what this is? I’ve seen a few lately. (I don’t think I can post more than 1 pic per entry, so I’ve posted a second time for the second specimen.) I thought at first that it was Argiope aurantia, yellow garden spider, but the abdomen seems too narrow for that to be true. This one has banded legs, but the other one found very close by did not. The webs were large, spanning up to 2.5 meters from tree limbs over and down to a pile of weeds and sticks around a fallen oak, right on the edge of a small lawn. The webs appeared to have multiple layers, too. The bodies were large, easily 30 mm or more, not including the legs. When disturbed (I had to clear out the brush), the spiders climbed up the web into the trees.

This looks like Nephila clavata, the Jorō Spider.
Definitely looks like that, and the description of the web matches, too. Thanks!
