Our guess is Araneus diadematus (Cross Orbweaver) - it was well underground, perhaps 2”, exposed when we were digging carrots - is it possible the vibrant colour was from eating creatures that were feeding on the carrots?
She’s a bit odd. I think she’s Araneus marmoreus, a Marbled Orbweaver. Thank you for attempting an ID. Sometimes People submitting photos do better figuring out the identification than I do. I’m guessing her ID ((It’s a guess without the specimen under a microscope) based on her legs. Her legs marking bands are red and white proximal to black and white distal. She also has vibrant colors, which is beautifully common with the Marbled Orbweavers. Her abdomen is shrunken. This can mean that she has deposited her eggs in an egg sac.
