Picture of unidentified spider

Comments & ID Thoughts

I am sharing an image of this spider, as I found it on my deck at the back of my house in Calverstown, Kildare, Ireland. It seemed to have been dwelling under the decking before I spotted it. I couldn't find an image online of any similar spiders identified in Ireland. If anyone has any idea on the spider type and its characteristic, it would be much appreciated.

This spider is a member of the family Agelenidae. Two genera come into consideration here: Tegenaria and Eratigena. It’s quite difficult to tell them apart, even from a dorsal picture showing all the markings. I’m inclined to guess Eratigena sp., but you have seen the spider, so you might be able to recognize if you compare it with other pictures.

Leaning towards Eratigena myself but it’s hard to say.
