Is this a wolf spider? He is in a bucket of water has created an air bubble around him to survive in the water. He was on the side of the bucket (out of the water) but went into the water when I picked up the bucket.

Yes, this is a Wolf Spider, likely from the genus Hogna. I thought that only the Wolf Spiders of the genus Pirata use that underwater survival technique. Very interesting.

Wow! I didn’t know that any Wolf Spider could do that. I was looking through the Fishing Spiders of Texas, but couldn’t find any that look at all like this. This would explain why some Wolf Spiders escape people by jumping into swimming pools.
