Spiny-backed spider, female, white version, underside. Seems to always hang on web with underside toward the light.

That’s an interesting observation. It makes sense to have to black side toward a light source to reduce the risk of being seen. I noticed in dim light that the white and yellow spots on the underside refract light from a camera flash. I suspect that the spots scatter the moonlight’s UV light that some insects use to see at night. That would hide the shape of the spider to the insects.
