Found on the bottom of a hole I was digging about 8 inches deep. Seemed to move pretty slowly. When I tapped the the box it held its front 4 legs up like a Tarantula when it's fighting a hawk wasp. The abdomen was Matt but the test of the body and the legs were shiny. After the photos I let it go in another part of the garden where it sat very still. It was still there after half an hour.

This spider is in a group called the mygalomorph spiders, which includes tarantulas, although it isn’t a tarantula. Looks like a Trapdoor Spider, maybe Cyrtauchenius walckenaeri.
