Comments & ID Thoughts

This is the 2nd time we have seen a spider like this in our garage in recent months. It’s back is bulbous, shiny and appears to be a deep red/burgundy. The rest is black. I haven’t been able to confirm if there are the telltale red markings of a widow on the underside of it’s abdomen, but I don’t think there are.

If the markings aren’t present, it may be a false black widow (genus Steatoda). I’m in Vancouver and have had similar ones in my house. They aren’t considered very harmful to humans. I would exercise caution around it if you cannot identify the underside, but if it is a Steatoda, it can actually prey on true widows and other pests.
