Yesterday I met a large spider with about a 10 inch whip span, in my home in Chapada Dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso. The house was quite overgrown with creepers, which we cleared a few days ago, so I suspect it had been living in the creepers and was seeking a new habitat (but alternatively it could have travelled the sixty metres from the National Park).
It came through the door from the service area into the kitchen, and just stood still, observing for several minutes, with its whips extending out to each side as widely as possible – I guess sensing smells in 3-D(?)
I attach a photo. Is it a known species?
