Hello, I live in Nova Scotia Canada and I’ve had 2 encounters with this type of spider, I’ve attempted to do research on it and my thoughts are it’s a “dark fishing spider” I don’t think it’s a wolf spider but I could be wrong , these creatures are found in my basement. If someone could identify this spider or clarify it being a dark fishing spider I would appreciate it. Thanks

It does appear to be Dolomedes tenebrosus, a Dark Fishing Spider. We try to be prompt with answers. We are lagging at the moment because of the holidays, the pandemic, and we are all volunteers. The easiest way to tell Fishing Spiders from Wolf Spiders is that Fishers can climb vertical surfaces and the Wolfs can’t. Dolomedes also have pointy posteriors and a flatter, low-slung posture. D. tenebrosus usually had orangey band markings on their legs that the other North American species don’t.
