Black lace weaver
The abdomen appear to be a pretty solid color. Does it look like he has any sort of pattern in person?
The shape is a match for a Black Lace Weaver, but yes, there should be some pale makings, pinkish dark gray on top and yellowish on the underside. It could be the lighting. I was just photographing a pair of them last night in my cellar. Yours is in a semi-stressed position that hides much of the markings. They make dark gray sheet webs that form a funnel.
Obviously the lighting isn’t very good but from what markings you can see on this spider it seems like this might be a Funnel Weaver in the Coras genus. They are also native to Virginia so it is a possibility. https://bugguide.net/node/view/1328187/bgimage
