I’m really hoping this is not a brown recluse

Instead of a Brown Recluse it may also be a Mediterranean Relcuse (Loxosceles rufescens). Sorry I know that’s no consolation.

I think I would go with L. reclusa. Populations of L. rufecens have only been found in extreme southern California just into Arizona from my last research. Anything is possible.

Can you provide a current source of data, the most recent I can find is early 2017, LSU shows isolated populations of L.rufescens in southern LA.

I think you just answered your own question? 2017 isn’t recent enough? Isolated populations of L. rufescens are in LA. I cannot determine an exact species of Loxosceles from an image – only give a best guess based on known range and L. rufescens is too close and successful at increasing its range for me to want to rule it out which is why this was filed to genus, not a specific species.

One is native to north America, the other is an introduced species. They are closely related but separate species that can be distinguished by microscopic examination of differences in the genitalia. There may be other differences also but I am not that well acquainted with them.
