Comments & ID Thoughts

I was mowing my property and this thing was large enough to catch my attention as I was passing by. No idea what it is. The large yellow/white patches on its back through me off.

You have two of these Wolf Spiders in your range. Tigrosa georgicola and Tigrosa aspersa. T. aspersa is the largest in the genus. T. aspersa has a fainter median band going down its carapace, compared to T. georgicola, which has a very prominent median band. I would say it is most likely T. aspersa because the band appears to be broken in the middle. Its difficult to tell in this photo so I could be wrong.

As for the white splotches, I really don’t know what they are. They don’t have the right shape to be wasp larvae so I’m not sure what it could be.

Could they be fungus patches?

I’ve also attempted to ID some large spiders (wolf spiders, fishing spiders) I’ve seen posted on here with anomalous, asymmetrical white patches. I’d love to see a study done to find out what they are.

It does resemble something like tree lichen so it could be.
