Comments & ID Thoughts

Unknown what spider this is. Never seen one like it ever before. Found it sitting on my backpack while out hunting deer in Fiordland National Park New Zealand, in march this year, (2021). Would like to know what it is please.

Based on shape, I’d say an orb-weaver of some kind, but as to what kind, I am entirely at a loss. I recommend checking out the book “A Photographic Guide to Spiders of New Zealand” by Dr. Cor J. Vink. If you don’t find your spider in there, I might suggest submitting your picture to the author through his university:

Your spider is so unique and so lovely. I’d love to know if/when you find out what it is.

Thanks Helper! I need someone to publish, ” A Guide to finding all of Your Guide Books.” 😉 Online, after a longer effort than usual for me, the closest species I could find in the range is https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/201609-Poecilopachys-australasia The males don’t have the two white spines and there are few photos of them. I thought this was going to be an easy one to find photos of because who wouldn’t take photos of a spider this beautiful?!

Yes, it is beautifful! I wish I could find one of these myself. I need to invest in some spider guides myself! Being able to open a location-specific book full of pictures would be so much easier, as well as great fun. Maybe we should create a compendium of our online resources. I could post a picture that’s just text: “online resources here” and we could all comment with our resources to share with everyone. What do you think? Yes, it’s amazing the number of species for which there is limited online documentation. South America is even more difficult than… Read more »
