Black house spider would be my guess

LocalEntomologist

I didn’t check your location originally (oops) but this is actually much more likely to be a black lace weaver.

room_of_arachnids

I’m not sure it looks like more of a trapdoor spider.

LocalEntomologist

I’m not great at these kinds of spiders, so I’ll trust your expertise. That would also make sense since it was found on the ground

room_of_arachnids

I’m no expert I’m 11 lol, the specific species is Ummidia sp at least I think.
there seem to be quite a bit of the species roaming around Oklahoma at the current time sadly, these species are fairly unknown.

That looks like a pretty good match to me! I’m a teen so I don’t have much expertise either 😛

room_of_arachnids

yea, I looked up Oklahoman trapdoor spider species and I found a few of them but, we’re also similar to the same genus. I’ve probably been to arachnids for 4 years of my life so I would say I’m pretty into spiders, lolz.

LocalEntomologist

Impressive! Do you keep any spiders?

room_of_arachnids

not officially but I’ve saved a few spiders from getting smooshed by my mom. I made a feeding video on my Channel today feeding my male Rabid wolf spider, (his name is Flapjack btw.) absolutely awesome takedowns but sadly I wasn’t recording when he took it down. in the future, I plan on getting an Arizona blond tarantula

I’m honestly shocked how you knew the black lace Weaver I’ve actually never heard of it before, cool-looking spider! it’s crazy how much I don’t even know yet there’s a whole different world of arachnids out there!

That’s really cool! Most of my money goes towards figure skating, so I just have spiders that I catch in my yard or the local nature preserve. Parson spiders are one of my favorites, since they are pretty and really good hunters 🙂

room_of_arachnids

yeah same I’m taking a nature preserve volunteer class at my local Nature Center and last time we caught some crawdads and I found a crab spider swimming in the water, also I’ve never heard of those parson spiders they look awesome!
(here’s Flapjack eating an oriental cockroach https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJkbtW2kyEk .) also, I treat Flapjack like a puppy dog lol!

Very cool! I’m too old for the camps at our preserve, but my Mom is a professor there so I’m allowed in the preserve 🙂

room_of_arachnids

nice! that’s awesome, how do you learn about so much spider stuff? is it just experience over time?

LocalEntomologist

I’ve learned a lot from this site, but the biology professors at my university are nice and have taught me a lot 🙂

room_of_arachnids

cool, are you into movies? if so and you have enough free time you should watch this movie called eight-legged freaks if you haven’t already, this movie was originally what got me into spiders. it’s so bad it’s good.

LocalEntomologist

I don’t watch a ton of movies but I’ll see if I can find it!

room_of_arachnids

ye, you might have to rent it which kind of sucks. 🙁

if you were to have enough money to buy a captive-bred spider what species would you buy?

LocalEntomologist

Probably a red knee tarantula or a goliath bird eater. I enjoy designing dnd scenes and minis, so I think it would be a lot of fun to make a fantasy style terrarium. What about you?

room_of_arachnids

yea! that sounds awesome! in my case if I were to get one I could get the Trinidad Chevron, grammostola pulchra (Brazilian black), and the Goliath birdeater
or even a poki.

Very cool! When I get an apartment I am excited to have a small reptile/arachnid room 🙂

room_of_arachnids

yeah, I’m a long way away from that but, hopefully if my luck is through the roof I might be able to bribe my parents to get me a tarantula

LocalEntomologist

I hope that works! It’s still going to be a while until I can live on my own, but I’m already saving up 😛

room_of_arachnids

yeah I plan to get a job at my local Braum’s at 14 years old, (yes they do hire at 14 years old)

cool story me and my friend Nathan which is 9 years old (he lives across the street) found two female black widows and caught them in cups. 0_0

room_of_arachnids

… isn’t the Black Widow the M O S T D A N G E R O U S S P I D E R I N N O R T H A M E R I C A ? I can’t believe how stupid we were

I’ve never actually seen a black widow in person :0. There are a lot of limitations for places I can work at my age, so job searching is a struggle.

room_of_arachnids

hmmm, I totally feel you right now there are not many specific jobs for people who like spiders/arachnids

have you ever been bitten by a spider? in my case I got bit by a bold jumping spider
right on the tip of my middle finger

LocalEntomologist

I’ve been bitten by a few, mostly sac spiders because I’m around them a lot and mine are pretty cranky :P. I avoid handling mine though because I have a low pain tolerance.

room_of_arachnids

oof, I tried to handle my wolf spider I caught because he got knocked down from his enclosure by my cat and escaped into my closet and I free handled him back to his enclosure. and that is the reason why my mom doesn’t want me owning a tarantula or doesn’t want me to be an entomologist because she thinks I’ll get bit

Last edited 2 years ago by room_of_arachnids
LocalEntomologist

Depends on the spider of course, but being bitten isn’t that bad from my experience. Unless you are allergic, most spider bites are more annoying than painful

room_of_arachnids

true but I specifically want to research and study the Sydney funnel-web spiders and some old world tarantulas which can be sometimes deadly venomous

LocalEntomologist

Ah that makes sense. I’m mostly into spider keeping as a hobby. I currently sell some art, but I’m hoping to become full time some day 🙂

room_of_arachnids

yeah, I’m kind of going through a lot of phases right now but, I hope to become a professional one day…

LocalEntomologist

I hope that works out for you 🙂

room_of_arachnids

hope that works for you too, too bad spiders doesn’t get a good rap their reputation is getting better but still… also do you mind me asking for your name?

LocalEntomologist

Nice to meet you! Hope we can chat again sometime.

room_of_arachnids

good morning, I did some research last night on this spider and I found some cool info!

LocalEntomologist

Oh cool! What did you find?

room_of_arachnids

comment image

saddle-like depression on the tibia of the third leg

room_of_arachnids

and these spiders can sometimes make webs slightly underwater to catch fish!

another interesting fact I found is they hide in flowers to catch bees and other pollinators

LocalEntomologist

That’s a cool photo! I didn’t know you could attach photos to comments :0

room_of_arachnids

yea! and these spiders have special fangs that help them dig to make their burrow!

room_of_arachnids

they will act very aggressively if pushed out of their homes!
they will act like funnel webs too, rearing up and showing you their fangs

LocalEntomologist

That’s really amazing! I don’t know much about ground spiders.

room_of_arachnids

yea, not a lot of people do, unfortunately. trapdoors, in general, are very unknown and I hope to learn more about them in the future.

room_of_arachnids

yes, Ummidia sp, was it around 1.5 in Long?
