Nice find! Most likely Steatoda grossa.
This is a Black Widow. Either L. mactans (Southern) or L. variolus (Northern). One of the ways to tell these two species apart are the red/orange spots on its back. Unfortunately, this spiders spots are too difficult to make out.
Thanks for correcting me! How did you tell this apart from a false widow? I’ve seen some that have fairly flat black colouration, so I assumed it was a false widow.
False widows in NA don’t get this jet black in color. The red/orange spots on its back are also not found on any Steatoda’s or Asagena’s, if I remember correctly. Steatoda’s will usually have some sort of reddish-brown hue to them. Sometimes a greenish hue due to their translucency. Black Latrodectus spp. typically aren’t that translucent, almost a solid black. Steatoda spp. are also a lot hairier than Latrodectus spp., especially on the abdomen and legs.
