Found on a bed. There is a web behind the bed,but the spider was not on the bed. This was a very energetic speedy spider, but our nine-year-old daughter was speedier with a jar! She is eager to know what type of spider it is.

We think it is a Herpyllus ecclesiasticus, Eastern Parson Spider. Is this correct? Is there a way to know if it is female or male?

You got the ID. It is technically difficult without a microscope, but I’ll say female because she’s big with relatively short legs. Females dominate in the world of spiders. They are almost always much larger and stronger than the males. Males focus their lives on mating without getting eaten by a female. Females make the big webs and eat more to feed the eggs growing inside of them. We didn’t get to measure the spider, but in thinking about whether it was male or female we did note that it is definitely closer to 1 cm than 1/2 cm, which we guess further reinforces that it is a female.
Our daughter has released the spider into the wild.
