Picture of unidentified spider

Comments & ID Thoughts

First glance it looks like a wolf spider or grass spider. I thought it was a grass spider because all of its eyes were relatively that same size, whereas wolf spiders have two larger eyes. However grass spiders seem to have narrower abdomens and spinerettes sticking out. But the pattern on the back made me think it couldn't be a wolf spider because there was a Chevron pattern which is characteristic of grass spiders. So I felt like it didn't match up with either. That's when I took this picture and used Google lens to help me figure it out. That's when I came across the name "false wolf spider" aka Zoropsis spinimana. However this seems to be a rare spider in the United States. I still can't help but think he is a Zoropsis spinimana because he looks exactly like them. I would appreciate an opinion with more expertise, since I'm wholly unqualified to ID any spider.

I don’t have enough certainty to give a best guess at the species. I use Google Lens when in desperation for a hint. It is great at insects and plants, but not as good with spiders. I test photos to train the app and give feedback. At least it stopped identifying many spiders as Brown Recluse or Black Widow. I… Read more »
