Adult Fishing spider lives in a big hole in a sweet gum tree. Been there two years in a row Large spider ~ 12cm or 5 inches tip to leg tip. Last year had white fungus growing on it. UGA confirmed ID.

This may be Dolomedes albineus, a White-banded Fishing Spider. https://bugguide.net/node/view/1985 The link is to the Fishing Spider photo identification guide on http://www.bugguide.net The markings can be variable on this species. They resemble lichens and pale weathered wood. This species is often found away from water bodies, often on trees. It’s nice that the spider has a safe hole to hide in and can be found in consecutive years.
