Comments & ID Thoughts
Sighted in the early morning, around sunrise. There are hundreds, possibly thousands across the pasture, in the tall grass, spaced just feet apart. Some of the webs are empty.

Neoscona oaxacensis, Western Spotted Orbweavers. That’s so cool! This species is found in a variety of colors. Do you know if the ones in the field were different or the same color? I’m curious about what determines the colors and how much variety there is within a population. I see some really pretty color and markings combinations on spiders submitted to us.
Thanks so much! When I’m out tomorrow morning at sunrise, I’ll check for variations. I appreciate you taking time to respond. I was really hoping someone might know. I’m stoked.
Surprisingly, I only found one web this morning. The field that had been filled with them was empty. Seems like it was a one time event for now. If I see them again, I’ll update. Thank you again for identifying them for me 🙂
You’re welcome! They may have hid, sensing a storm. They’re very fragile and wind and raindrops at a high enough velocity can be fatal. I lost several orbweavers in my yard to strong rainstorms.
