I believe this to be an Orb Weaver spider. I think it's a female since it's rather large. It's cold and windy outside today so the spider is keeping the legs tucked in. Web found between house and trash can.

Yes, she’s a Spotted Orbweaver, Neoscona crucifera. You have the gender correct, the females are much larger and they are the ones that wait for food and mates at the center of the big orb webs. Her defensive/sleep position is interesting to see an orbweaver do in the daytime. Wind can be dangerous for them if they are blown to a hard landing. Now I’m interested in observing more orb weavers in the wind. I lost this year’s yard orbweaver (house and trash bin also) to a wind storm, she was the same species as yours.
