Is this some kind of Widow? I read there is a false black widow in the UK that looks like this, but this one was pitch black. And I am in Santa Clarita, California. Desert climate.

Yes and yes. You found a Noble False Widow, Steatoda nobilis. This specieswas accidentally exported from Europe to California. We have other False Widows in common with other parts of the World. Steatoda grossa, the False Black Widow, is the blackest and least transparent that I know of. We and Europe both have that one too. There’s a whitish triangular mark on the abdomen of yours that we use along with location to identify it as S. nobilis. It isn’t dangerous to humans though it is in the same family as the Widows.
