Comments & ID Thoughts

I believe this is a southern black widow, but we also have redback spiders also here in the south.

I concur!! I live in NM and I see a lot of these often in my yard. They like warm and dry places – cracks in cinder block wall, under yard decorations, in the garage ANYWHERE and woodpiles. Yikes! Yes, the reaction strength seems related to how much you react to insect stings. Watch out for Velvet Ant Wasps.
My husband’s grandfather was not into household cleaning. When Hubby was a kid and stayed at his house he told Grampa that the sugar bowl was full of ants. Grampa’s reaction was, “They’ve gotta a right to be there!” He would’ve probably said that about Black Widows too if it got him out of cleaning the sugar bowl.
