Comments & ID Thoughts

I live in Kagoshima, Kyushu, Japan. I found this spider in the front entryway of my apartment building, at 1:30 AM. It was between 2 and 3 inches leg tip to leg tip. I managed to scoop it up on a sheet of cardboard and take it back outside. It would scuttle away from the sheet if it got too close, but otherwise it didn't try to run away all that actively. It kind of looks like a brown recluse, but I don't know much of anything about spider species. Kagoshima has a lot of wooded land, and Sakura island, which is an active nearby volcano, is mostly uninhabited. It's possible this spider hitched a ride from one of the cars taking a ferry from Sakura or one of the other nearby islands.
